Your Rights As a Criminal Defendant
A person becomes a criminal and defendant once they are charged with the crime. For you to be punished and convicted of a crime, the US government has to put together a case that proves without reasonable doubt you are guilty.
There is a limit in the way the government can prosecute, punish and investigate criminal behavior as stated in the United States Constitution, which provides you with a number of rights. This option is the right representation, right to remain silent, right to a fast and public Jury trial. There is also the (double-jeopardy) that you can’t be tried and accused for crimes twice.
- Right to Remain Silent – you as a criminal defendant you have the right to remain silent. That is your right that protects you from incriminating oneself during your arrest and the trial. Also you a criminal defendant have the right to challenge your accusers and testify in your own behalf. - Right to Representation – adequate legal representation is the right to criminal defendants. A lawyer will be provided to you by the US government. If you do not have the money for a lawyer. You also have the right to represent yourself and decline any legal representation. - Right to a Fast Public Jury Trial – Public trial is a right you have. This right makes sure that the US government will not have access to perform secret meetings and hearings that could violate your individual rights. You also have the right that you will be tried by a jury. From state to state the form of the jury varies, although jury members usually consist of community members and the ramble randomly called to court and the lawyers get to select the ones for defense and prosecution.

- You Have the Right to Not Be Tried for the Twice for a crime– the state cannot retry you for the same crime. Once the process of the trial has been properly conducted and finalized. Trying a defendant twice for a crime is called ”double jeopardy” in the United States Constitution and has a ban on this all states.. Also, the state government - federal government cannot try you twice for the crime.
